Painting Love on the East River: A New Orleans Artist Travels to Brooklyn for Alessandra & Lucas
There's a particular kind of magic in packing an easel, brushes, and watercolors into a suitcase and crossing state lines for love. That's exactly what brought me from New Orleans to Brooklyn, New York — to Giando on the Water, a waterfront venue in Williamsburg where the East River meets the Manhattan skyline — to live-paint the wedding of Alessandra and Lucas.
As a New Orleans live wedding painter, I've set up my easel in ballrooms, courtyards, and backyard gardens all over Louisiana. But there's something different about traveling for a wedding. You leave behind the humidity, the oak trees, the sound of a second line somewhere in the distance — and you arrive somewhere entirely new, tasked with capturing a couple's love story in a place that isn't your own. It's a beautiful challenge, and it's one I never take lightly.
The Venue: Giando on the Water
Giando on the Water sits right on the edge of the East River in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with
floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the Manhattan skyline and three of New York's most famous bridges. It's the kind of view that does half the work for you as an artist — golden light bouncing off the water in the evening, the city skyline glowing as the sun goes down, the energy of New York City humming just across the river.
Setting up my easel with that skyline as a backdrop was unforgettable. Every stroke of the brush had to hold its own against a view that dramatic — which meant painting fast, painting boldly, and trusting the same instincts that have carried me through hundreds of live weddings back home.
The Couple: Alessandra & Lucas
Every wedding I paint tells its own story, and Alessandra and Lucas's day was full of the kind of joy that makes this work feel less like a job and more like a calling. Watching two families come together, hearing the laughter during the first dance, catching the quiet look between a couple who just became husband and wife — these are the moments I'm there to preserve. Not a photograph, but a living, breathing piece of art that will hang in their home for the rest of their lives.
By the end of the reception, what started as a blank canvas had become a finished watercolor painting of their first dance — Manhattan glowing behind them, their families gathered around, the whole night distilled into a single piece they'll pass down for generations.
Why Couples Fly Me In
I get asked often why a couple in New York would hire a wedding painter based in New Orleans. The honest answer is that live wedding painting isn't about geography — it's about capturing a feeling. Couples who choose to have their wedding painted live, rather than after the fact from photos, want the real energy of the room in their artwork: the actual light, the actual dress, the actual joy on people's faces as it happened. That's something I can bring to a ballroom in Brooklyn just as easily as a garden in New Orleans.
Traveling for weddings has become one of my favorite parts of this work. I've had the honor of painting for couples across the country, and every trip teaches me something new about how love looks different — and exactly the same — everywhere you go.

What Alessandra and Lucas will hang on their wall isn't a print or a photograph — it's an original painting, made in real time, in the same room where they said "I do." It's the kind of piece that becomes part of a family's story, something their children and grandchildren will look at one day and ask, "Tell me about your wedding day."
That's the heart of what I do, whether I'm painting three miles from my studio in New Orleans or three states away on the banks of the East River in Brooklyn.
